The chiller operates on the principle of vapor compression refrigeration. It consists of several key components:
Compressor: The chiller contains one or more scroll compressors. Scroll compressors use rotating scrolls to compress refrigerant gas.
Evaporator: The evaporator is a heat exchanger where the chilled water or other cooling medium absorbs heat from the process or space. The refrigerant inside the evaporator evaporates and extracts heat from the water, causing it to cool down.
Condenser: The condenser is another heat exchanger where the hot refrigerant gas is cooled and condensed back into a liquid state. In an air-cooled scroll chiller, the condenser is cooled by ambient air instead of using water or cooling towers.
Air-Cooled Condenser Coils: The air-cooled condenser coils are located outside the chiller and are exposed to ambient air. The hot refrigerant gas flows through these coils, and the heat is transferred to the surrounding air.
Expansion Valve: The expansion valve regulates the flow of refrigerant into the evaporator, allowing it to expand and cool down rapidly.

The high-pressure, high-temperature refrigerant flows into the condenser coils, where it releases heat to the ambient air and condenses into a liquid state.
The condensed liquid refrigerant passes through the expansion valve, where its pressure and temperature decrease significantly.
The low-pressure, low-temperature refrigerant enters the evaporator, where it absorbs heat from the chilled water or cooling medium, causing it to cool down.
The refrigerant vaporizes in the evaporator, and the cycle repeats as the vapor is compressed again by the scroll compressor.
Air-cooled scroll chillers are typically equipped with fans that blow ambient air over the condenser coils to enhance heat dissipation. This eliminates the need for additional water sources, such as cooling towers or water loops, making them a convenient and self-contained cooling solution for various applications.
