An air cooled chiller rejects heat to outdoor air through condenser fans. It does not require a cooling tower, cooling water pump or complicated cooling water system. It is simple to install and especially suitable for water-scarce areas.
A water cooled chiller rejects heat through cooling water and usually works with a cooling tower. It can achieve higher energy efficiency in many projects, especially large-capacity systems, but requires more water-side equipment and regular water treatment.
A scroll chiller is usually compact, low noise, easy to operate and suitable for small to medium cooling capacity. It is commonly used in light commercial HVAC and industrial process cooling.
A screw chiller uses screw compressors and is better suited for medium to large cooling capacity, continuous operation and applications requiring capacity regulation. Air Cooled Screw Chiller: High-Capacity Outdoor Cooling with Optional Free Cooling
The Air Cooled Screw Chiller is designed for larger cooling loads. It uses air as the heat rejection medium and water as the chilled water carrier. It is widely used in shopping malls, hospitals, hotels, apartments, factories, office buildings, laboratories, data centers and process cooling systems.

Summer mode: compressor refrigeration works as a conventional chiller.
Transition season mode: when outdoor air is lower than chilled water return temperature by about 2°C or more, outdoor air pre-cools the chilled water.
Winter mode: when outdoor air is lower than chilled water return temperature by about 10°C or more, the system can provide full free cooling with almost no compressor power consumption.
This design can reduce annual energy cost significantly in suitable climates.
